In recent years, ransomware incidents have become increasingly prevalent among state, local, tribal, and territorial government entities and against national critical infrastructure to include emergency communications. Disruptions to public safety operations directly and negatively impact the health and safety of the communities they serve. Despite this increasingly frequent threat, the SAFECOM Nationwide Survey (SNS) found almost half of public safety organizations are not planning for cybersecurity making them more vulnerable to an attack. Gaps Identified by the SNS
44% of public safety organizations indicated that a cybersecurity disruption or breach affected their ability to communicate.
Only 20% of public safety organizations have cybersecurity incident response plans, policies, and capabilities in place;
Only a little more than a third of organizations incorporate risk assessments into their plans;
Only 10% have coordinated response and restoration activities with internal/external parties; and,
94% don’t incorporate a cyber incident response team into their planning.
